February Five

In honor of Valentines Day, I will try to post five things I love every day.

Places that I Love

1. Jacksonville Florida

You never forget your first love. I fell in love with Jacksonville when I was 13 and spent the summer with my Grandmother.



and at the beach with my cousin Jennifer and my little sister.

2. Victoria British Columbia Canada

I had so much fun here as a missionary. The city is beautiful, the ocean is close and there are flowers everywhere.

3. Scipio Utah

Although I don't often admit it, I do love the little town I came from. We had so much fun playing in this old barn.

4. Home

I love my house. It is my most favorite place on earth, my sanctuary and my nest, my garden, my shelter and my canvass.

flash of insight

I had one of those awakening "ideas" last week. It came right a long with making New Years Resolutions. I realized that I will never have more time than I do now. I will never be more organized than I am now. I will never have it all together if I don't get it together NOW. This is big for me because I live in a tomorrow trap. " I'll do it tomorrow", "I'll start tomorrow". When I have more time I'll....., When all the kids are in school I'll..... So you see, coming to this awareness changes a lot of things for me. I either need to do it now or let it go. Even if I do have more time in the "future", I will have other things to fill it with, other interests, other obligations.

So I start this year with the commitment to do it now or don't do it- let it go.

A couple of years ago I asked myself the question "What three things could you change that would make you happier and more fulfilled?"

The list now includes five things and these have been my resolution ever since. So to recommit myself, here are my five things.

1. Go through and organize everything in my house. One drawer or shelf a day if that is what it takes. (I am amazed at everything I have that I have forgotten about)
2. Spend more time with God everyday and make that time meaningful.
3. Eat better - less sugar (you know the drill)
4. Be more "present" with my children. Really listen when they speak, make what matters to them matter to me.
5. Speak my truth. This is my hard one because I am a quiet person who does not like conflict, contention, rocking the boat, or putting anyone out. So I get lost in my own silence and people assume I agree with them because I don't contradict.

So wish me luck as I continue to work on these- slow and steady wins right?

lists and gifts

The kids have made their Christmas wish lists, but what they don't know is that I have a mathematical formula that determines the probability of them receiving the asked for gift.
it goes like this

$= cost of desired object
t= time they will spend enjoying/using the object
s= storage space the thing will take up
n= number of parts involved

the formula looks like this:

$ x t/s x n

so for example Legos would be cost: moderate (depending on the set) times the time they will play with it (high), divided by the storage space (low) times the number of pieces (high)

To not give anything away, I will just call this next thing an American Whirl Ball

Number of pieces = low

I don't think it's going to happen.

One thing I have noticed is that Christmas is a month long classroom with so much to teach us about ourselves, our relationships, our wants and our needs. As I read the kids lists I understood , just a little better about God and his relationship to us as our parent. We can ask for whatever we want, but like our children, we might not understand which things have the most value. As a parent, I can read the list and know how much they are going to enjoy each thing they ask for. Is it worth the cost? Is it something they really want or did they just put it on the list because the commercial looked so cool.
